Welcome to Crisis Compass Northward Pointed, an Online Magazine dedicated to equipping faith leaders and church members with practical, heart-centered resources for crisis intervention and mental health support. In a world increasingly fraught with stress, isolation, and despair, the church is called to be a sanctuary of hope—where broken hearts find healing, and wounded souls discover purpose. Here, you will find a curated collection of tools, insights, and reflections designed to strengthen your ministry and deepen your capacity to care for those in their darkest moments.
I’m Dick A. Montanez Jr., a pastor, certified crisis counselor through the American Association of Suicidology, and a hospital chaplain with years of experience walking alongside individuals facing life’s most profound challenges. My journey has taken me from the bedside of hospice patients to the pulpit of a thriving congregation, always anchored by the conviction that faith and compassionate care belong side by side. With an academic foundation in Chaplaincy from Loma Linda University and hands-on experience in 988 crisis intervention, I have witnessed both the devastating impact of unspoken pain and the transformative power of a caring community.
Thanks for reading!
We will explore a wide range of topics: from identifying warning signs of suicidal ideation to developing safety plans that honor spiritual traditions; from training modules on empathetic listening and crisis response to digital integration strategies that expand your reach in an interconnected world. Each post will blend evidence-based best practices with biblical wisdom, offering step-by-step guides, real-life case studies, and scripture-centered reflections that you can adapt for your church’s unique context.
Beyond practical tools, Crisis Compass is a window into my perspective—a world filtered through the lens of pastoral theology, clinical insights, and a deep love for God’s people. You’ll encounter devotional meditations that speak to the soul, interviews with mental health professionals who share your faith, and action-oriented checklists that turn knowledge into real-time support. Whether you’re a seasoned pastor, a volunteer on the front lines, or someone who simply cares about your community’s wellbeing, you will find encouragement and equipping for the journey ahead.
I invite you to subscribe, engage, and share your own experiences. Together, we will build a network of grace-filled responders whose humble hearts and trained minds stand ready to answer the call. Let’s navigate faith and intervention as one body—bringing light into the darkness, one compassionate act at a time. Your journey begins here together today.
